Gaston Damag
Description
My work is a related with the ethnographic museum concept of representation “of what is called primitive art.” The museum represents the people through artefacts, they represents these objects as testimonies of human evolution.
These object changes of meaning since they are not anymore in their context of origin. They become a part of human history.
I create works using several mediums like; sculpture, texts, photos, videos, performance, etc. in these mediums I uses fake reproductions of idols and other fake objects. These objects are usually made for tourists’ souvenirs or sometimes to fake some collectors.
I want to challenge the spectators’ on how to see these objects differently from the museums concept of representation. I hope to make something more alive and present, as these objects are still part of an alive culture.
