STEFAN GLETTLER

Info

To decipher Stefan Gletter’s work, one must understand life in Central Europe in the 1980s and 90s. Born in the Austrian province of Styria in 1980, he grew up on a farm in Shrink-to-Fit-Jeans with siblings, a bouncing ball, books, trees, animals, the Rubik’s Cube, and a Walkman. Later on came the Gameboy, Baywatch, Trainspotting, Nirvana, Pulp Fiction, Rave, Grunge, Nokia and Sony. In the early 2000s he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.

Gletter makes paintings, plastics and sculptures that are stubbornly analog, defiantly rough, purely humanistic, affectionately sentimental, and profoundly haptic. His oeuvre is one that precisely translates human impulses into form. Determined by an unbiased observer attitude he describes his approach as a “voyeuristic act between life, art and artificiality.” The familiarity of things and their haptic attitude, which is quite often the beginning of the abyss leading in detail to areas of fetishism, is a starting point for many.

A general knobby playfulness occupies a large space in Glettler’s work process. He consciously mixes aesthetic codes and genres, re-contextualizing materials to realize tactile surfaces. In regards to form, Gletter cognizantly positions his painterly work within the reference-network of Color Field Painting, whilst his plastic oeuvre emerges from postmodern object art.

The “Jagging” paintings, for example, formalize through multiple masking during the painting progress. His plastics are shaped associatively by pre-digital features and experiences. In his object series “dancer”, for example, the classic concept of sculpture is expanded to include a performative character.
Stefan Glettler lives and works in Vienna/Austria.
